Echidnas were such an unusual creature that when discovered, were put into a category with the Platypus called Monotremes.

They just don’t really fit into the simple rules of animal hierarchy and taxonomy that existed at the time, and no-one really has made a terrible amount of progress since.

An new study on the Echidna’s reproductive physiology has shown some surprising results.
