The Indigenous Literacy Foundation are today celebrating Indigenous Literacy Day with a free virtual event, fostering a love of books telling Indigenous stories using first languages.

In remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, access to books can be scarce.

Meanwhile, Western approaches to literacy disregard the significance of oral storytelling and other culturally relevant ways of learning.

Literacy day aims to allow new indigenous generations to be able to connect to their heritage more strongly and hopefully pass on these stories to all generations that follow.
