New research from the University of Queensland found many First Nations women who died in custody had not been sentenced, and that the trend is continuing.

The research team analysed more than 700 coroners’ inquest reports between 1991 and 2020, finding most of these deaths could have been prevented.

The findings also show only two out of 16 First Nations women who died in custody were sentenced in court.

The Wire’s Eduardo Jordan asked Professor of Law at the University of Queensland Tamara Walsh about the research.
