Over 3000 Australians lose their lives by suicide every year. Yet, a recent study suggests that only less than half of people talked about their suicidal thought, plans, or attempt.
Dr David John Hallford, Clinical Psychologist and Senior Lecturer at Deakin University said that some of the reasons include stigma that is still connected to shame or hopefulness, the fear of being put on medication or hospitalised and even underestimating this life-threatening situation.
To provoke disclosures, it is essential for them to feel that friends and family are willing to listen and understand their feelings. Starting a conversation might be hard, but it is scientifically proven not to make them feel worse or suicidal.
