A Pilbara community is taking one of Australia’s biggest mining corporations to the Federal Court in a case which could strengthen Native Title claims across the country.
The Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation is seeking $1.8 billion dollars in compensation from the West Australian Government over damage caused by an iron ore mine on country.
However, the Fortescue mining hub was established four years before Native Title was granted to the Yindjibarndi community.
If the case is successful, it could open the door to compensation for other Indigenous organisations.
