A quarter of Australians are turning to social media for their news — and that figure jumps to 60 per cent among Gen Z — according to the latest Digital News Report.

In response to growing concern over the influence of global tech giants, the Federal Government has strengthened its media bargaining code. Originally designed to ensure platforms like Meta pay for news content, the code now acts as an incentive — with a warning: strike deals with news publishers, or face the possibility of a tax.
