The ABC has reported that top executives from the University of Technology Sydney went on an alumni trip to the US costing over $140,000.

The funds spent on this trip went towards several business class flights both to and from the US, as well as domestic flights within the US. It was also revealed that the executives had large banquet dinners at exclusive venues such as the Intercontinental and the Penn Club in New York City.

One of the five executives included UTS Vice-Chancellor Andrew Parfitt, who only a couple of months ago announced that 400 staff members will become redundant in attempt to regain a loss of funds, which was believed to be caused by the reduced numbers of international students.

These revelations has caused backlash from the National Tertiary Education Union, claiming the need for greater transparency in the University’s fund allocation and decision making as well as protecting the mental health and livelihood of staff at risk of losing their jobs.

A UTS spokesperson issued this statement:

“Alumni and engagement events are an important part of the activities of universities and budget is allocated for these activities. Decisions are made on a case by case basis as to the involvement of senior leaders depending on need.

The April visit to the US was for a series of meetings with partners and stakeholders. Areas of focus included AI, technology and healthcare, and opportunities for collaborative research with existing and new strategic partners.

These visits provide valuable opportunities to deepen relationships with alumni, engage with donors and partners, explore new avenues for collaboration and identify investment and partnership opportunities. They also help extend philanthropic support, benefiting both our students and the university.

The 2025 visit and functions were particularly important to nurture during a time of flux in US policies towards funding and collaboration with the higher education sector.”
