When a naked 16 year old teen was beaten by four police officers in Byron Bay in 2018 bystanders filmed the incident and the footage went viral. That led to the an investigation by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and the charging of one of the officers. His acquittal last week has led to calls for more weapons training for police and the inclusion of trained medical and mental health staff within police stations. The family of the boy, who suffers from Aspergers syndrome, are hoping that the verdict may yet be appealed by prosecutors.
