The Northern Territory government will allow fracking in the gas-rich Beetaloo Basin, despite traditional owners, scientists, and environmental groups warning against the risks of this.

The NT government has said it has met 135 recommendations from the 2018 Pepper inquiry – which found fracking risks could be mitigated if these were fully implemented.

But the the independent officer in charge of overseeing the recommendations, Dr David Ritchie, says a commitment to reducing emissions had not been fulfilled.

Speaking to the ABC, NT Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said recommendation 9.8 had “absolutely” been met.

National Radio News reporter Amy O’Halloran speaks with Beetaloo Basin traditional owner and Nurrdalinji Native Title Aboriginal Corporation chair Johnny Wilson about this.
