Aboriginal legal services across the country released a joint statement last month saying they were on “the brink of collapse” after years of underfunding, increasing demand, and with no response to calls for emergency funding –despite the current Government promising to address First Nations justice.
The recent federal budget includes almost $2 billion for First Nations health, housing, education, employment and the Voice to Parliament, but has not delivered anything for legal services.
The Federal Government’s budget in October announced a First Nations Justice Package – with some money for initiatives and supports – but those on the ground are saying legal services are being left behind, in the face of soaring demand.
