Calls for NSW to remove voting restrictions for incarcerated people

​​The NSW Council for Civil Liberties has called on the NSW Electoral Matters Committee to remove the restrictions on incarcerated people’s ability to vote.

Under the current NSW electoral act, an individual who’s been convicted of an offense and is serving a sentence of 12 months or more, is unable to vote.

This disproportionally affects First Nations Australians in incarceration, who are overrepresented in the system.
