The City of Sydney has announced that all new residential buildings, large commercial developments, and hotels must be fully electric by January 2027.

In a media release, the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore says, “These changes will create healthier and more energy-efficient buildings which will meet future energy standards and avoid expensive retrofitting”.

However, with electricity prices expected to rise this July 1, there are questions surrounding the financial impacts of going all-electric.

According to Energy Consumers Australia’s report in February this year, a growing number of Australians are already planning to disconnect from gas, with one in three homeowners considering it in the next decade.

As other councils explore similar policies, Sydney’s decision marks a shift in energy use and in reaching Australia’s net zero emissions target by 2050.
