Two former federal agriculture ministers have called on the Crawford Fund to increase the proportion of Australia’s aid budget invested in agricultural research.
Board member Joel Fitzgibbon affirmed the benefits of aid-funded international agricultural research for development, particularly in agriculture that has been hard hit by Covid-19.
The funding has a clear direction, it will also contribute to food and nutrition security in low-income countries, and brings significant returns to Australia’s biosecurity, scientific knowledge and global diplomatic reputation.
