COP28 stands for the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP), almost all of whom have signed the Paris Climate Change Agreement which aim to limit the rise of global temperatures to 1.5 degrees, a goal which the world is not on track to achieve.
The United Arab Emirates is hosting the COP28 Climate change summit, a somewhat odd choice as the UAE is one of the top ten oil refiners and exporters. The President of the summit Dr Sultan al-Jaber is also head of the United Arab Emirates’ state oil company, a choice which would seem like a conflict of interest.
The is yet to be seen if the summit will create any meaning full plans to reduce emissions or if COP28 is a vanity project to sanitise the image of the world biggest polluters.
