Tonight the Australian Human Rights Commission will announce the winner of their awards in Sydney, recognising the efforts of extraordinary Australians advocating for human rights.
Mechelle Turvey is one of the finalists of this award thanks to her work with the WA Police.
Just over a year ago, she lost her fifteen-year-old Noongar/Yamatji son, Cassius, who was assaulted on his way home from school in Perth, and died ten days later.
Since the beginning of the year, Ms Turvey has been working with WA Police to train officers in dealing sensitively with victims of crimes.
