The endemic virus Monkeypox has spread to Europe, North America, and Australia via travel and exports. The virus is akin to smallpox and has a death rate similar to that of COVID-19.

Australia currently has two confirmed cases, with the World Health Organisation estimating up to 5 more unidentified infections.

Ruby McGinty asked James McCarthy, Director of Victorian Infectious Disease Service at Royal Melbourne Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the Doherty Institute more about the virus and how it affects Australians.
