May 26 is National Sorry Day, marking a day of reflection on the tragedies suffered by the Stolen Generations. Archie Roach’s 1990 song, “Took the Children Away” shone a light on a dark period of Australian history, where children were forcefully taken away from their families, leaving lifelong emotional scars.

But, generations later, there are still concerns about child removal today, with Aboriginal children 9.7 times more likely to be removed from their families than non-Aboriginal children are. Aboriginal leaders and advocates are worried about history repeating itself.
