New regulations a threat to campaigning charities

Changes proposed by the government would make Australia’s 59,000 registered charities liable to sanctions if their staff, members or supporters commit ,or are likely to commit, summary offences.

Charities and legal groups have expressed concern that the proposals are inconsistent with democratic government and constrain freedom of political expression.

The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia is concerned that local community radio stations could be penalised for broadcasting information about political events, protests or other dissenting activities.
