An internal police investigation has taken place over the death of Lindy Lucena. Lucena was killed in a domestic violence attack in Ballina on New South Wales’s far north coast in January 2023.
The investigation revealed that the police took almost an hour to respond to the call of Lucena being attacked as well as the responding not leaving his vehicle to investigate the scene. NSW Police did not deem the incident as critical, which has led to the family of Lucena and several advocates of domestic violence believing that Lindy would still be alive if the police acted accordingly.
In light of these findings, there are now calls for NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley to organize an independent investigation into the matter, in order for the police officers to demonstrate greater accountability over the situation and to show greater concern for the domestic violence epidemic in the state.
