The Northern Territory’s proposed change to the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle will make it easier to remove Aboriginal children from their culture and communities.

Advocates and community leaders are pledging the Territory’s government to scrap the changes, as it will be easier for courts to place Indigenous children in non-Indigenous placements.

Around 90 per cent of children in out-of-home care in the Northern Territory are Aboriginal and the latest data shows that only 23 point 8 per cent are placed with their relatives or kin.

National Indigenous Radio Services’ reporter Sarah Watego asked Acting CEO of the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency Anthony Beven his concerns about this amendment.
