Last week saw the end of a “10-year battle” over the naming of Queensland’s World Heritage listed Fraser Island – now known as K’gari, officially restoring the name used by traditional owners for more than 60 thousand years.
Local Butchulla people and Australians nation-wide celebrated the landmark change, and the latest in several decades of re-naming events across Australia which acknowledge Indigenous heritage and connection to place.
However, place-name restoration is often a complex issue. So, what determines a place-name change and what can this mean in the broader intricacies of cultural significance?
