A report released yesterday by Social Reinvestment Western Australia has strongly recommended raising the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 14 years old in the State, following the lead of the ACT. The report highlights the long-term effects of detention and interactions with the justice system on young children, especially for Indigenous children, who are grossly overrepresented.
Dorinda Cox, a Noongar Yamatju woman, former police officer, and lead Greens candidate for the Senate in WA discussed the impact this change could have on the experience of Indigenous people in the WA justice system.
