An Albanese government review of Australia’s migration system has found a number of shortcomings furthering the vulnerability and exploitation of migrant populations.
While the current industry model has a reliance on temporary skilled migrants without facilitating pathways for permanent residency, migrant visas have also been structured to facilitate worker exploitation.
Despite paying taxes, migrants are further excluded from voting and accessing social welfare benefits.
In light of government discussion surrounding potential reform, Unions NSW has made several recommendations to address the conditions faced by skilled migrants working in Australia.
