A Vietnamese family has been battling the risk of deportation from Australia but say it has become a race against time convincing authorities to grant permission for them to stay in the country.

The Nguyen family have lived in Australia for nearly 10 years but have been fighting the threat of deportation following a failed sponsorship arrangement.

But, support for the family has been building with the situation now backed by the community of Bathurst, municipal council and the town’s business lobby.  A petition for them to stay in Australia has also garnered over 18 000 signatures.

For now, the family remains on a bridging visa which is set to expire in one month without ministerial intervention.

The Wire has been following the story as the case unfolds.
